How to Become an Occupational Therapist
Under current Korean legislation, individuals seeking to become occupational therapists must complete a major in Occupational Therapy at an accredited university, pass the national licensing examination administered by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute (KHPLEI), and obtain licensure issued by the Minister of Health and Welfare. Licensed occupational therapists are authorized to practice occupational therapy in accordance with the scope of practice defined by law.
Career Pathways After Graduation (Upon Licensure)
Licensed occupational therapists may pursue professional practice across a wide range of healthcare and community settings as defined by current legislation. Upon completion of the program and successful acquisition of national licensure, graduates may advance into the following career pathways:
Medical Institutions — University hospitals, general hospitals, and rehabilitation hospitals
Community-Based Healthcare Settings — Welfare centers for persons with disabilities, public health centers, and child developmental support centers
Geriatric Care Facilities — Geriatric hospitals, national dementia centers, and long-term care facilities
Mental Health Institutions — Psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, and special education schools and offices of education
Public Agencies — National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) and Korea Employment Agency for Persons with Disabilities (KEAD)
Medical Industry and Assistive Technology Sector — Assistive technology centers and vocational training institutions for persons with disabilities
Further Academic and Global Pathways — Graduate studies, overseas academic programs, and international employment
